Paint Pen FAQs

Common questions about using, filling, and maintaining refillable paint markers

How do paint pens actually work?

Paint is contained in the barrel and sealed with a plastic spring-loaded valve. The pen tip sits against the valve plunger. When you press the tip against your work surface, it pushes the valve open and gravity pulls paint down to the tip. The tip saturates with paint and you're ready to go.

Why does paint blob at the tip and mess up my work?

This happens when you hold the nib down too long while priming. It takes time for paint to soak into the nib. If you keep it pressed too long, excess paint runs down the outside of the nib and pools at the tip. Quick pumps work better than long presses.

Small funnel for filling paint pens

What's the best way to fill my paint pen?

Thin liquids (stains, alcohol-based paints, inks): Use a syringe to draw liquid from the original container and inject into the pen.

Thick paints (acrylic, latex): Use a small funnel for easier, neater filling.

What can I use these pens for?

Refillable paint pens work best with liquids that have the viscosity of water or thinner. Thicker paints need dilution but work fine once you find the right ratio. These pens let you:

  • Create custom colors for any project
  • Keep exact shades on hand without mixing each time
  • Touch up furniture, cabinets, walls, auto paint
  • Label, personalize, and decorate items
  • Apply cosmetics, screen printing solvents, specialty coatings

How do I paint plastic flower pots with these pens?

Our 6mm tip refillable pen works great for labeling flower pots. Here's how:

  1. Make sure the pot is clean and completely dry
  2. Fill the pen with latex paint diluted with Floetrol and water
  3. Prime the tip so paint flows evenly
  4. Letter and draw as desired
  5. Let dry thoroughly before putting pots outside

What makes these pens durable?

These aluminum refillable markers are lightweight and resist almost all fluids - paints, indelible inks, nail polish remover, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, xylene, MEK, screen printing solvents, and more.

The spring-loaded valve opens when you press the nib down (which is why they're sometimes called "pump pens"). This design preserves your paint, prevents spillage, and stops evaporation.
